Held Sunday afternoon at the shelter, the Field of Dreams Open House was organized by the Burlington County Animal Shelter staff, Burlington County Commissioners and the Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter. The event featured baseball-themed activities, prizes, hot dogs and other concessions and a simulated baseball game pitting the Burlington Strays (Dogs) against the County Cats. Every adoption amounted to arun for the adopted pet’s team.

The Strays were first on the scoreboard, but the Cats came back quickly and built a 6-2 lead. The Strays mounted a strong rally before the Cats ultimately prevailed by a score of 7-6.

Burlington County Commissioner Deputy Director Dan O’Connell stressed that all the shelter pets were winners, along with the individuals and families who came out to the event and especially those who adopted animals.

“Thirteen adoptions in one day is outstanding and shows how events like this that bring people to our shelter to meet and interact with the animals can make a difference,” said O’Connell, who tossed out the ceremonial first pitch at the event. “We had a fun time and saw a lot of great animals find new loving families. It was a beautiful day for baseball and pet adoptions and we want to thank everyone who volunteered and donated to the animals in our care.”

Among the 13 adopted pets were Ginger, a senior dog who was surrendered last month after her owner passed away, and Romeo, Pierre and Biscotti, a trio of cats who were adopted Sunday by their foster family.

For those who missed Sunday’s baseball party, there’s still plenty of opportunities to help support the shelter and the animals that reside there.

Adopters and foster families are still needed. Available animals are listed online athttps://www.co.burlington.nj.us/1446/Available-for-Adoption. Adoption fees are waived all year long for senior residents, veterans and military families.

Residents who are unable to adopt or foster can also help by following the shelter’s social media and spreading the word about the available dogs and cats.

Animal lovers can also volunteer their time to help with shelter tasks, make financial donations or give the shelter needed supplies. For more information, including a wish list of needed items, visithttps://www.co.burlington.nj.us/168/Animal-Shelter.

“The Burlington County Animal Shelter is one of the our most important services and we’re incredibly grateful for all the shelter staff and volunteers who care for and assist these animals,” said O’Connell. “On behalf of our Board, we want to thank them for all they do and also thank the residents who have opened their homes and their hearts to our shelter’s animals or provided other support to help us care for them and find them loving homes. Our board also wishes the adopters and adoptees all the best.”
