Recipe FAQs

Can I cook fries in a casserole dish?

Yes, you can cook the fries in a casserole dish, but we recommend baking them first to get them nice and crispy before adding them to the casserole dish with the other ingredients. We find when you bake them in the casserole, they’re way too soggy for our tastes.

What do you eat with cheeseburger casserole?

This is a heavy dish, so it pairs nicely with a light salad such as our Caesar Salad, veggies like Asparagus in the Oven, or fresh fruit like our Mexican Fruit Salad.

Get Kids Involved

Ages 2-3: Your little one can help spread the french fries over the meat mixture and sprinkle on the cheese. A fun counting activity might be to try to count the number of fries as they are on the baking sheet.

Ages 4-5: Have your child help pour the ingredients into the meat and stir to combine. Simple tasks like this will help build their confidence in the kitchen.

Ages 6-8: Teach your child how to use a meat masher to break up the beef to brown it. They can also assist with adding the casserole layers to the baking dish.

Ages 9-11: Supervise them while they prepare the entire recipe. Remember to have them read it twice before beginning the recipe.

Ages 12+: Let them prepare the entire recipe, unsupervised, while you do the happy dance in the corner!

Budget Tips

We like to buy our ground beef in bulk at Costco. We break it into family portion sizes, put them into Ziploc bags, and store them in the freezer. Then we can pull it out to use as needed for recipes like this Cheeseburger French Fry Casserole.

    • Jess Jankowski says

      That’s awesome!!!

  7. Craig says

I’d like to make this but I don’t like mushrooms is there
Another soup that might be a little more to my liking I could use?

    Reply

    • Jess Jankowski says

Hi Craig, you may want to try using Cream of Cheddar soup instead. We have not tested it with this soup and imagine it will make the casserole a little more cheesy overall, but you may enjoy that. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. Sonia ancion says

    Hey Craig,
I just made this casserole with cream of bacon soup and it was good

    • Karen says

where did you find cream of bacon! I’ve been seeing it in recipes but not in stores…

    • Jess Jankowski says

I’m sorry but we use Cream of Mushroom soup not cream of bacon in this recipe.

I’m sure we will love this. If I already have the ground beef done
Can I put it all together an bake it all for like 30 to 40 minutes?

    Reply

    • Jess Jankowski says

Hi Debbie, we would not recommend skipping the step of cooking the fries separately first. This helps crisp them up before adding them to the casserole. Skipping this result could result in soft and mushy fries.

  11. Debbie says

I really want to try this, but we don’t use steak sauce, is there something else I can substitute for the steak sauce?

    Reply

    • Jess Jankowski says

Hello, while it will alter the overall taste slightly, you should be able to substitute it for A1 sauce, Worcestershire sauce, or BBQ sauce.

  12. Jessica says

could I do this in a slow cooker?

    Reply

    • Jess Jankowski says

Hi Jessica, we would not recommend cooking this in a slow cooker as the fries will become soggy instead of crispy when cooking them in the oven.

  13. Chantil Varese says

can I use cream of chicken instead of cream of mushroom?

    Reply

    • Jess Jankowski says

We prefer the mushroom flavor with the ground beef, but you can substitute the cream of chicken. Just note that it will alter the overall taste of the recipe.
