The ”Greta” crochet shoulder bag is a great starting point for those new to the art of crochet and a satisfying quick project for more experienced crafters.

If you are like me, seriously hooked on crochet—I cannot spend my day without crocheting something, even if it is only one row or round—then this bag pattern is for you. I finished one square in less than 30 minutes, meaning you can crochet it for around 2 hours, including all the steps from start to finish.

Additionally, the granny squares bring a classic touch and allow for creative color play, enabling each bag to be a distinct showcase of the maker’s individuality.

Bag’s Construction

This shoulder bag is made of 3 granny squares. First we will crochet the squares, then we will fold them into a triangles and at the end we will join them. As the last step, we will crochet the handle and sew it.

Yarn

For this crochet shoulder bag, I used Lion Brand Hue and Me yarn, which is the perfect weight. It is not too bulky or too thin. I chose Hue and Me because I wanted a bag that can be finished quickly and a pattern that is easy to remember. This yarn has a nice stitch definition and easy care properties, making it ideal for a bag that will be worn a lot.

Because of the beautiful color palette available, your bag’s color choices will never disappoint you. You can pair together almost any color available, and it will still look amazing.

Pattern notes

The pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

If you want to make the bag smaller, crochet less rounds for your granny squares.

You can adjust the handle, but keep in mind that it will stretch a little when you fill the bag.

Adjust your hook size to obtain the gauge.

This shoulder bag size is big. If you are a petite person, adjust the size of the squares.

Folding the squares

Place the squares on a flat surface with the wrong side facing and fold them to form triangles, as shown in the graphic.

Joining the granny squares

After folding the squares into triangles, place them on a flat surface with the right side facing you to join all the sides without cutting the yarn.

First, we will join square 2 and square 3, then we will continue joining square 2 with square 1. To do that:

Take your hook and join from the bottom right corner until you reach the middle of the bag ( where all the squares meet each other ). Then, continue on the other side of the bag until you reach the second bottom corner. Do not cut the yarn. Turn the other ( back) side of the bag and join square 3 with square 1 and then square 2 with square 3.

Straps

I used 6.5 mm for the strap. First, I designed the bag with HDC stitches for the strap, but then I reworked the pattern with SC stitches. You can make it in both ways, but with sc stitches, it is more sturdy.

with color D

Row 1: ch5, 1 hdc in second ch from the hook, 1 hdc in next 3 chs ( 4 hdc in total )

Row 2: ch1, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, turn

Repeat row 2 until your strap measures 43 cm. Fasten off. Take a tapestry needle and sew the strap on both sides of the top edge of each triangle.
