Looking for an alcohol free hand sanitizer recipe that is actually moisturizing to the skin? Look no further! Learning how to make a moisturizing hand sanitizer is so easy. Let me show you how!
IMPORTANT: Please Read
This recipe is and was created as an Alcohol Free Hand Sanitizer Recipe but because alcohol has been shown in studies to be effective at killing certain pathogens and viruses more effectively, I have included a recipe that does include alcohol.
According to Rutgers University (source):
Alcohol in many forms, including rubbing alcohol, can be effective for killing many pathogens. You can dilute alcohol with water (or aloe vera to make hand sanitizer) but be sure to keep an alcohol concentration of around 70% to kill coronaviruses. Many hand sanitizers have a concentration of about 60% alcohol, and Lysol contains about 80%; these are all effective against coronaviruses.
So I have shared an alternative hand sanitizer recipe below that does include alcohol.
Disclaimer: This new recipe does contain alcohol in the recommended levels, but I am not claiming this recipe will actually kill coronavirus, flu, or any other bacteria or virus so please use at your own discretion.
Why Choose an Alcohol Free Hand Sanitizer?
I personally do not use hand sanitizer a lot, but they use it all of the time at my daughter's school. Every fall and winter her hands get extremely dry and chapped because of it.
Why does hand sanitizer burn and dry the skin out?
Conventional hand sanitizer can contain 60-95% alcohol to effectively kill germs and bacteria. Unfortunately this high percentage of alcohol, repeatedly strips the oils and moisture from the skin. (source)
Repeated use over time, leads to dry, chapped and even bleeding skin.
How to Make a Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer
To help combat the issues of dry and chapped skin, I wanted to create a moisturizing hand sanitizer recipe that effectively fights germs without drying the skin out.
That is why we are making a hand sanitizer with aloe. Aloe vera is known to be very soothing to the skin and is always recommended for burns on the skin as well. Learn more about the benefits here.
You will also find aloe vera in our baby wipes solution recipe and men's aftershave recipe.
Where to Find a Hand Sanitizer Dispenser
For this recipe, you will need some kind of hand sanitizer dispenser.
If you have an existing dispenser that you want to re-use that is fine.
I am using one of these small hand sanitizer bottles that I found on Amazon.
I have noticed, using the lighter color bottle that it can get a little discolored from the essential oils. Just something to keep in mind…
