Is The Fog (2005) Boring

1. The Fog | Rotten Tomatoes

  • It's a lifeless film, directed without an ounce of energy and subsequently dragging on for what feels like 3 hours. To top it all off, it ends on an anticlimax.

  • The prosperous town of Antonio Bay, Ore., is born in blood, as the town's founders get their money by murdering a colony of lepers. But the truth of what they did is concealed from subsequent generations. More than 100 years later, Elizabeth Williams (Maggie Grace), whose family lives in Antonio Bay, returns just as a statue in tribute to the founders is to be unveiled. When a mysterious fog rolls in, Elizabeth and her boyfriend (Tom Welling) soon discover it has vengeful supernatural powers.

  • The 2005 remake of John Carpenter’s horror classic, The Fog , has long had a rather infamous reputation on the internet as a bad movie. • There really is something out there in the dark. In the small town of Antonio Bay, a terrifying and malevolent force hidden within a thick and eerie fog terrorized its residents. Shrouded by the fog lies a ghastly secret of merciless revenge, one that the town's inhabitants would do well to unravel -- before it's too late. (Revolution Studios)

  • Where did all the real horror films go? Too often these days we're subjected to tame crap, designed to scare 12-year-old girls only. How much more rubbish, like Darkness Falls, The Skeleton Key and The Grudge, do we have to suffer? Where are the risktakers and the controversy? Are we really that naive these days that trash like The Fog gets green-lit before a script is even written? There is no need for this remake. Sony makes so much money off its frequently awful Revolution/Screen Gems films that the budget could have gone to something worthwhile. Of all the films to remake, The Fog is a strange choice.

  • It’s difficult to conceive of a modern horror genre without the work of John Carpenter, whose “Halloween” (1978) is generally credited – along with work like “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” (1974) – as instrumental in popularizing slasher films, inspiring hordes of threadbare-budget knockoffs, and creating an appetite and expectation for endless sequels and, eventually, reboots.

  • Reviewed by Colin Jacobson: A remake of The Fog could have improved upon the original. I liked John CarpenterÂs 1980 edition but certainly didn’t find it to be without flaws. Unfortunately, the 2005 rendition is a complete dud that makes its predecessor look brilliant. Never scary, spooky or even remotely intriguing, the remake turns out to be a boring mess.
